Rosa Elvira Sierra Santos was born in Mexico in 1975. She studied violin and then piano at the National Private University of Mexico for five years. In 1993, she began to sing with Marco A. Saldana before going up to Mexico's Schola Cantorum in 1995 where she was taught by Alfredo Mendoza. She obtained her Baccalaureate in Voice four years later. In 1999, she continued her vocal studies with Sasja Hunnego and Gerda van Zelm at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the Hague (Holland). In 2001, she joined the Flanders Opera Studio in Gand (Belgium) whilst simultaneously working on lieder and oratorios and investigating the baroque repertoire. She enhanced here operatic skills by participating in Master Classes with Diane Forlano, Cheryl Barker, Cynthia Sieden, Christophe Rousset and others.
She first appeared on stage in 1997 as Malika, ("Lakmé" by L. Delibes) at the Angel Ezquivel Opera Festival in Mexico where she sang "Passion According to Saint Mathew" by Bach. The following year she played Gilda ("Rigoletto" by Verdi) and was given the roles of Night and Mystery in "The Fairy Queen" by Purcell. In 1999, she was selected to play Maria in "Monkey See, Monkey Do" by Juarez with the Chamber Orchestra of Mexico. Then she was to be heard as Cherubino in "The Marriage of Figaro" and in the "Requiem" by Mozart. In 2000, she appeared in "Cantada para la Navidad" by Jerusalem with the Chamber Orchestra of Mexico. In 2001, she played Zerlina ("Don Giovanni" by Mozart) with The New Opera Academy of The Hague. In 2002, she sang the Soprano I part in the premier of Tom Johnson's "Una Opera Italiana" in Gand (Belgium) and appeared in recital in Gand and in Paris at Mexico House. During this period, she also gave concerts, oratorios and recitals of lieder and melodies in The Hague, Gand, Saltillo, Oaxaca, Tampico and Mexico City.
In June 2002, she auditioned for CNIPAL and was accepted for the 2002/2003 season. She worked with, amongst others, Yvonne Minton and Mady Mesplé, conductor Christian von Gehren, choreographer Lydie Callier and directors Jeannette Aster, Robert Fortune and Jean-Marc Forêt.
In September 2002, she was selected to sing Lucia in "The Rape of Lucretia" by Benjamin Britten with the Opera of Flanders for a tour of Belgium.
In October 2002, she played the role of Musetta ("La Bohème" by Puccini) for the Opera Workshop at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels.
In the month of November 2002, she appeared in recital at Marseilles and Avignon opera houses. The repertoire featured Mozart, Bellini and Verdi. In May 2003, she sang a programme of Mexican melodies.
In April 2003, she was the understudy for Barbarina in "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart with the Marseilles Opera (Music Director: Daniel Pektov - Producer: Jean-Louis Martinoty).
In the following month of May, she sang the soprano part of the "Mysterium" by Nino Rota in the Church of Saint Michel in Marseilles during the Festival of Religious Music.
In June 2003, she participated in CNIPAL's show entitled "Fragments d'Amour" performed at the Marseilles Opera House. This operatic show, inspired by "The Magic Flute" and "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" by Mozart, was directed by Jean-Marc Forêt. The Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by Christian von Gehren.
[size=+1]With the Chamber Orchestra of Mexico, conducted by Benjamen Juarez, Rosa Elvira Sierra Santos recorded "Mexico Barroco-Puebla" (Baroque Music from the City of Puebla) and "Monkey See, Monkey Do" by Robert X. Rodriguez (first recording in Spain) for the Urtext Digital label.
